Check out this clip, which shows some of the innovative industries that are flourishing in Israel’s Arava Desert. This water scarce area provides 60% of Israel’s fresh vegetable exports. A surprising growth engine for the region is the ornamental fish industry: the Arava Desert is home to no less than 18 ornamental fish growers, and they make Israel the sixth largest exporter in the world of ornamental fish. Alon Gadliel, Director of the Arava Research and Development Center, explains the background and technological expertise needed to grow ornamental fish in the desert.
